The Controls Engineer II is a key contributor within the Parcel Product Innovation group within the Research and Development (R&D) function. This role focuses on controls aspects of new product development and serving as the primary support for our Innovation Center test systems. This role requires a hands-on engineer who can evaluate and troubleshoot high-level system performance as well as detailed component-level issues. The Controls Engineer II will manage test loop setups, develop and validate control software, and document configurations for reproducibility. This role will also collaborate closely with Project Engineering teams to ensure successful customer deployments by validating improvements and special applications before release.
Your role in our team
- You will design, develop, deploy, test, and commission PLC code and HMI interfaces for material handling systems using Rockwell Studio 5000, Siemens TIA Portal, and Lenze PLC Designer
- You will configure and integrate IPCs and PLCs to ensure reliable communication between Windows-based control software and PLC hardware
- You will configure, manage, and maintain test loop setups for existing parcel conveyance products, special applications, new product innovation, and proof-of-concept prototypes
- You will develop, maintain, and document software configurations, test procedures, and test methods to ensure reproducibility and compliance with performance and safety requirements
- You will test, emulate, validate, and troubleshoot PLC code, electrical equipment, and hardware/software functionality during testing and commissioning
- You will collaborate with Electrical Engineering on control network architecture, device requirements, and system standards
- You will work closely with Project Engineering teams to ensure validated solutions are successfully deployed to the customer site
- You will review customer standards and specifications to define system requirements and provide recommendations for productivity improvement, cost reduction, and enhanced customer satisfaction
Your profile
- You have obtained a bachelor's degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field
- You have gained 3-7 years of relevant work experience in the material handling industry or similar industry
- You are proficiency in Rockwell Automation PLC programming (including GuardLogix), Siemens TIA Portal, and Lenze PLC Designer required
- You have experience with Ethernet/IP and Profinet network architecture and industrial communication protocols
- You can travel to customer sites up to 25% for support and commissioning activities
- Your experience with IPC and PLC configuration and Windows-based control applications is preferred
- Relevant certifications such as Rockwell or Siemens PLC programming certifications are a plus
- You can work independently in a hands-on test and development environment, demonstrating strong problem-solving and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail, while managing multiple test setups and projects simultaneously
- You have proven you can collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams—including electrical engineering, project engineering, and R&D—along with strong technical documentation, reporting, and verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain complex technical concepts
- You have strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills across both hardware and software systems, with the ability to develop HMI interfaces and accurately interpret electrical schematics
